11TH & 12TH JULY 2026
Philip Larkin
The Next Generation

Could You Be the Next Philip Larkin?
The Book Extravaganza and Coventry Festival of Books are on the hunt for the next generation's Philip Larkin!
As part of our Philip Larkin Tribute on Sunday 12th July 2026, we are inviting young writers to enter a poetry competition inspired by the title 'The Library'.
Libraries played a huge role in Philip Larkin's life and career. After undertaking professional studies to become a librarian, he spent much of his working life in libraries, championing the importance of books, reading and learning.
We want to hear what the library means to you. Whether it's a place of discovery, imagination, friendship, comfort or inspiration, write a short poem titled 'The Library' and share your unique perspective.
The competition is open to young people aged 15–20, and the winner will receive a trophy and be presented with their award by Rosie Millard, President of the Philip Larkin Society, during the Coventry Festival of Books.
To enter:
Email your poem, along with your age and where you live, to rosiesretrobazaar@gmail.com
Closing date: Friday 19th June 2026, 4.00pm
Think you've got what it takes to follow in Philip Larkin's footsteps?
Don't just dream it, WRITE IT!
