About the event

Join debut novelist Lauren Mooney for a fascinating discussion of her acclaimed new novel, Service, a darkly funny and chilling modern gothic tale that explores class, work, privilege and identity in contemporary Britain.

When struggling personal assistant Danielle MacKinnon finds herself living in the grand Yorkshire estate of her wealthy employer, the boundaries between servant and master, friendship and dependency, reality and haunting begin to blur. Sharp, witty and deeply unsettling, Service examines the hidden costs of modern working life and asks what happens when the people who serve are expected to give more than just their time.

Drawing on her own experiences working as a personal assistant and her working-class roots, Lauren will discuss the inspiration behind the novel, the realities of class in modern Britain, and how a ten-minute play grew into one of the year's most talked-about literary debuts.

Following the talk, Lauren will answer audience questions…
